The salt road: 1,100 kilometres on one charge

From Modena to the Bonneville flats in an Aurea GT, with two stops and a great deal of silence.

Day one

The first 640 kilometres passed without incident and without conversation. There is a particular quality to a long drive in a car that makes no noise: you stop performing the journey and simply take it.

We stopped once at 480 kilometres, not because the car needed it, but because we did. Eighteen minutes on a 350 kW charger returned 80 per cent.

The flats

At dawn the salt is the colour of the sky and there is no horizon at all. We drove for forty minutes without turning the wheel more than a degree in either direction, and the trip computer read 1,104 kilometres when we stopped.
